Sanding the floors in the main living space and bedrooms was one of our priorities for this year. It was actually essential to get it done before Maggie gets too mobile… it may have given us the odd splinter. I’m very happy to say that we did that this month!
We almost hired someone for this job after Ben did the nursery himself. He did a great job in there but it was time-consuming. We where so close to hiring we even got quotes and a tentative date booked in BUT the savings where just too tempting and so one weekend we made the trek up the hill to Bunnings to hire the equipment we needed.
Maggie and I found ourselves sealed off in the kitchen with the hounds. Thankfully it’s generous in size with access to the bathroom and we were even able to sleep in our own bed as the old sleep out we are currently in has access to the outside. The kitchen and sleep out will be done another time as both require much more extensive work.
Perhaps they’ll be a Christmas school holiday job this year or next…
We opted to use a satin finish on the floors so the natural colour and character of the spotted gum floorboards could be seen. Using this finish also means that the floors were significantly lightened to what they were before we sanded. This was important to us as the main living space is quite dark, It only has 2 windows (it’s flanked on 2 sides by bedrooms) and having lighter floors helps bounce what little natural light we have around to increase brightness. We will also be painting the walls white to help with this. Since they’ve been finished we’ve found we haven’t had to have the lights on anywhere near so much so it’s having the intended effect.
It wasn’t without a couple of hiccups… the sanding took a lot longer than anticipated based on the last time we’d done it. The floors themselves are a bit wonky so Ben straightened those out a bit with the sander and then the wrong finish may have accidentally been applied (whoops). So, it required a quick additional sand and then when we bought the right finish it was an expired goopy mess so that was yet another trip to Bunnings.
